VMWare on Ubuntu: Could not open dev/vmmon: No such file or directory (solution)

I’ve been having a recurring problem with VMWare on Ubuntu 18.04. I had no problems during installation, but after a while I received the error in the title as a popup before the application shut down.

This post has a solution that has worked for me.

Note that after a while, the error returns and the steps need to be completed all over again.
