Why are the front vowels of the secondary cardinal vowel set rounded whereas they are unrounded as back vowels (with the exception of the low back vowel)? Why is the rounded-unrounded relationship inversed between the front and back?
A question for the ages! The likely answer is probably that the “primary” cardinal vowels more or less align to the English that was spoken by Daniel Jones, and the “secondary” cardinal vowels correspond to the rounded/unrounded counterparts of those.
