Finding documentation about recognizing non-standard words in Festival

where can we find documentation on recognizing non-standard words, specifically abbreviations? Section 15 of the manual (Text analysis) mentions numbers and money among others, but I didn’t find anything about how Festival tags these tokens as non-standard words (and how to pronounce the abbreviations, i.e. letter by letter or as a full word).

You can assume that Festival does it in the way described in this core reading. Remember that the assignment is about Text-to-Speech in general, not narrowly about Festival.
