Cannot copy files from the University network to VM

I’m trying to copy Festival configuration file following Module 3/Tutorial B to VM. After entering EASE password, it failed. Plus my VPN is well connected. And I typed in EASE password correctly.(I’ve tried for other passwords, if it’s wrong, the error warning would be different.)

Anyone comes accross the same problem with me? How should I deal with it?

Yeah, it works to receive files, but seems still fails to send files to certain folders

Thanks for testing. Those errors should not matter. Did you see rsync copying a lot of files the first time you ran it?

The second time you run rsync it won’t copy anything that is already copied, so it runs really fast.

Please try it one more time. You will always get the “Could not chdir…” error – ignore that. The other error “…failed to open…” should now be solved.

Hey there!
I am having problems as well for this part.
I connected to the VPN, I am in the VM terminal and, when I am asked to insert the first password for the lab, this message comes up:

ssh: Could not resolve hostname scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk: Name or service not known
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [Receiver]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(226) [Receiver=3.1.2]

I tried to insert the command again and the error is thrown without letting me insert the password.
I tried a couple of times, but I don’t even get to the point for the EASE password.

Sometimes the VM loses the network connection to the host computer. Can you reach any websites using a web browser in the VM? If not, then the network connection is definitely the problem.

First thing to try: restart the VM.

Let us know if this solves the problem, or if you need more help.

So, as you said, I couldn’t actually reach any website. It told me: “Server not found”.

I restarted the VM. However, I still don’t have connection.
What else can I do?

Try rebooting the host machine too.

Make sure your host computer is connected to the VPN. Then, in the VM, try these and report your results back here:

$ nslookup scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk
$ ping scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk
$ ping 129.215.204.88

How would I check if my host is connected to the VPN? Attached the results of the other 2 commands below (I used ctrl+C to interrupt the commands as I thought they would just go on infinitely – let me know if I should let it run)

OK – good – you can reach the machine. That’s possible without the VPN, but logging in to it requires the VPN.

To test if you are on the VPN, use a browser (try this on both your host computer and in the VM) and type “What’s my IP” into Google. You are looking for an IP address starting with one of these:

129.215
192.41

or maybe one of these

192.107
192.82
193.62
193.63
194.80
194.81

That means you are not connected to the VPN. Have you installed the VPN client (Forticlient) and used it to connect to the VPN?

ok, I get it – I’m connected to the VPN now, get the right IP (192….etc). Now when it asks for the atlab password it works, but asking for the scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk password I get the same error (code 255)?

It looks like students who enrolled slightly later on the course didn’t have their access enabled. Computing support are fixing this now…

Update: now fixed. Everyone should be able to rsync.

You have a lot of typos in your commands – you’re writing ‘scpl’ instead of ‘scp1’ and you are spelling rsync incorrectly.

You should copy-paste the exact command from the instructions to avoid these mistakes.

Thanks for reply!! copy+paste is not working for the terminal in VM,and after putting the password, things in the photo below comes up. I’m in one of the uni buildings as VPN is not working on my mac…. (for VPN I think I’ve tried like more than like 20 times of reinstallation, but it’s not sorted out yet and I really don’t know what is the problem)

copy-paste should work fine both within the VM and between the host and the VM but note that Linux may use different keystrokes for this, compared to your personal computer.

You can always use the mouse right-click menu to copy and paste, or the menu in the terminal window.

The error above suggests that your VM isn’t getting a network connection from the host computer. Can you browse websites using Firefox within the VM? If so, ask Google “What’s my IP” and report that here.

Also try this and report the results:

$ ping scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk

This should work even without the VPN. You should see something like 64 bytes from 129.215.204.88: icmp_seq=0 ttl=46 time=26.379 ms.

Terminate the process with ctrl-C.

Try rebooting the VM – this often clears up network connection problems.

Hi, I’m also stuck at this stage! I’m connected to the VPN, but when I run the line

$ sudo rsync -avul –progress –files-from=:/Volumes/Network/courses/sp/manifest.txt s1234567@scp1.ppls.ed.ac.uk:/ /

it asks me for the sudo password but won’t let me type anything into the shell. The enter key works, but because I can’t type an entry it will just ask me for the password again, it won’t register me pressing anything else on the keyboard. I can’t paste an entry either, nor does it work if I type the password without it showing up and then press enter anyway.

When typing passwords into the shell,no characters will appear (for security). But it’s still listening and will accept what you type. Just type the atlab password and hit ‘Enter’.
