I changed the rule using the following code Korin specified and it seemed to solve the problem.

(du_voice.setDiphoneBackoff currentMultiSynVoice (append ‘((ii @)) unilex-edi-backoff_rules) )

I would like to try the deleting the backoff phone rule like you specified in ii), but is there a way to revert this after applying it, or will I need to apply it to a copy of my current voice?
