Probabilities can get very small, so we must take care when storing them, and also when computing with them.
In the foundation material on logarithms, we saw that they allow us to store very large or very small numbers in the computer, and this now comes in useful for storing probabilities. Even better, the most common operation on probabilities is multiplying them, and that turns into addition of log probabilities. How convenient!
