On p. 83 Ladefoged concludes that “[a]s the loudness of a sound depends on the rms. amplitude and not on the peak amplitude, the first sound is louder than the second.” (emphasis added)
Comparing this with Fig. 6.2 on p. 82, the second sound should be louder, I think? Is this a typo?
I know where to find explanations for most of the different steps from text to speech but I can’t seem to find a source on how Festival comes up with syllable structure and stresses for words that are not in the dictionary.
Nevermind, the video explained it much better than the book.
On page 119, when Ladefoged uses the analogy of one long tube equalling the vocal tract, he says “It is apparent that this variation in air flow (or air pressure) has a wavelength that is four times as long as the length of the tube.” I don’t see how this is “apparent”. The two figures (8.3, 8.4) accompanying this passage of text don’t really make sense to me.
