This module is an introduction to the key concept of Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis (SPSS). It introduces the first form of SPSS: Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) + regression trees.
SPSS using HMMs + regression trees played a pivotal role in the development of speech synthesis: we can trace a direct line from it to current methods.
Understanding this method will provide a solid foundation on which we will build our understanding of more recent methods. That is why it remains part of the course.
But the content of Module 7 is not examinable: your coursework report does not need to mention it (although you could still choose to, if you think it’s helpful for the reader); the exam for undergraduate students will not contain any questions on SPSS using HMMs.
