There is some overlap between the readings in these two books. Ladefoged & Johnson is available as an ebook. However, there is material in Ladefoged’s ‘Elements of acoustic phonetics’ that is not covered in Ladefoged & Johnson.

Ladefoged & Johnson – A course in phonetics – Chapter 8 – Acoustic phonetics

Links the source-filter model to spectrograms and acoustic analysis of speech.

This is a PHON tutorial on acoustic phonetics. Go through the following Jupyter Notebooks.

  • phon/phon-m2-1-segmentation – do this one on your own (but help each other out with learning to use Praat).
  • phon/phon-m2-2-spectrogram-tutorial – do it on your own, then compare within your group. You could take a vote on each spectrogram, and bring the results to the tutorial.

You might need to update your copy of the notebooks to get the latest version.
